Here's a little background information for you:
Fappani on DVD
World-class horse training requires an inherent ability to understand both the mind and the mechanics of a horse.  Effectively training riders takes masterful communication - it requires being able to explain what you know. And, teaching it all on video is...truly an art.  It appears Andrea Fappani has mastered all three of these skills.
The first European ever to win the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Open Futurity, Fappani is also the youngest NRHA rider to have earned over a million dollars.  And now he has captured his strategy and practices on DVD.  His new training videos, entitled "The Process
To
Performance" and "Implementing Performance," are a series of systematic, well-explained techniques on how to build a solid performance horse.
While the video collection is primarily aimed at training two and three-year-olds for reining competition, any rider aspiring to sharpen their skills in the saddle will undoubtedly come away from the viewing experience with something they can put to use. Fappani has put many hours into his thought processes portrayed on film. "It took months of taking notes and writing things down while I rode...to breakdown what I know and do into teachable segments I could explain in detail," said Fappani.  "Years ago, when I was starting out, I watched every video I could find.  I know what it's like to really want to learn."
And, it is apparent that this is precisely the goal of this video: for his audience to learn, rather than just be "told." The lessons are explained in simple terms and complete thoughts. Moreover,
Fappani's
ability to appeal to the novice rider as well as the aspiring professional may be exactly what sets this training tool apart from videos of yesteryear.  There exists information discernable and usable by each end of the rider spectrum...and all of those in between. "My videos are pretty dummy-proof," explains the Italian-born reining professional.  "And, I don't mean that in an insulting way.  They are just simply created to work...for anyone."  He adds, "I wanted to make something that anyone wanting to improve their reining skills could relate to.  Techniques they can take to their own arena, on their own horse, and get positive results."
Along the way, Fappani has succeeded in producing a true comprehensive guide on understanding the body mechanics of a horse as it relates to western performance.  Through an easy-to-follow succession of lessons, viewers are taught exercises and techniques for
suppling
a horse's body, and instilling a subsequent foundation that lays the groundwork for performing effortless maneuvers. The audience is taught how to perform an exercise; and they are taught why it is important. The instruction is a catalyst to a goldmine of information... and an opportunity to experience two years worth of lessons in a matter of hours.
The first volume in the series (which we sell; the 2 yr old), "The Process
To
Performance" is a straightforward, step-by-step guide to training exercises intended to commence at the point during the two-year-old year when a colt has been successfully saddled, carries a snaffle in his mouth and is relatively accustomed to having a rider on his back. Through nineteen 30-minute lessons, viewers are taught how to teach a colt the basic skills associated with stopping, backing, rollbacks, turnarounds and lead changes. The volume begins with "Guiding at the Walk, Trot, and Canter."  It ends with a lesson on "Drawing (the colt) Into
The
Ground." The foundation strategy behind
Fappani's
flawless style in the show pen is revealed through exercises focused on "softening" the four body sections of the horse.  As in both volumes, every lesson is neatly divided into five recurring parts:  1) the goal, 2) the exercise, 3) common rider mistakes (in teaching the exercise), 4) horse problems (in learning the exercise), and 5) success tips.  Each lesson clearly, logically, and systematically builds on the previous.
An undertone of continuity is accomplished through several common themes that carry over from the two-year-old to the three-year-old volume.  Fappani stresses the principle of reward-based training. "A horse does not learn from the pressure being applied. He learns from the release of the pressure," he explains. And, just as important, is the need to take the training of a colt slow...one step at a time.  "Do not advance to the next exercise or level, without first mastering the former," he stresses.
"Because each step always builds on the last."
The second volume (which we sell; the 3 yr old), "Implementing Performance," outlines
Fappani's
3-year-old training program.  Fifteen lessons cover all pertinent aspects of training from the beginning of the three-year-old year right up to futurity season.  The training syllabus begins with "Introducing
The
Bridle" and concludes with "Getting Ready For The Futurity."  The gradual progression of training is demonstrated as maneuvers take on a heightened level of expectation.  Training for accuracy in circles, speed control, turnarounds, stops, rollbacks and lead changes is intensified.
Fappani's
techniques for producing consistency in the maneuvers are demonstrated, and often times repeated - not only for emphasis, but also for training purposes with the horse at hand.
A significant element of this DVD series lies in the fact that it is not perfect.  And this is a good thing.  Throughout the entire series, Fappani has mixed in the very un-Hollywood element of reality. Simply put, his horses make mistakes. And, it is those mistakes that often serve to illustrate the most effective lessons for the audience. The spontaneity is what lends itself to the overall feeling that a lesson is taking place, rather than a lecture. Not only does Fappani share what it looks like when things go wrong, he effectively explains by example what to do about it.
Throughout its entirety, the
videography
captures
Fappani's
unmistakable talent.  His passion for his profession is the backdrop...his expertise and ease on horseback, which need no script, are natural and unpretentious.  In his closing segment, Andrea Fappani explains that the horse that wins a futurity is not necessarily the horse with the most talent.  It is the horse, he says, that has been best prepared by the individual who has taken the time to put all the parts of a performance together...and this is a universal strategy that applies to building a solid performance horse in general.  The "process" and the "implementation" depicted in this DVD series provide an effective tool designed to accomplish this goal.
The third volume is titled "THE ART OF FINE TUNING SERIES 3" the details of riding that make a difference is about teaching you the rider how to perffect your trained horse.
Learn how to keep a broken horse fresh and honest in the show pen in order to achieve great results in Derbys and aged events.
The fourth volume is titled "THE ART OF FINE TUNING SERIES 4" the details of training that make a difference teaches you how to keep your broken horse fresh and at their best in the show pen making you more competitive.
