Harmonium, also called peti or baja, is an Indian musical instrument. It is an important instrument in many genres of Indian music and is common in Indian households.
Harmonium belongs to the family of free reed aerophones and resembles small organs the size of a table. Each harmonium has a bellows at the back that is pumped by one hand while the other hand plays the keyboard. Inside they contain several chambers. In each chamber there are different banks with free reeds. The size and shape of each sheet in the bank determines its pitch. Engagement stops direct the airflow to various chambers. Every playing key and every drone controls the air through one or more leaves in a chamber. When the drones are activated, they create continuous harmony and are played in unison with the keyboard. There are two main types of harmonium: a foot-pumped version that resembles a small organ and a hand-pumped portable version that folds up for easy portability. This is a hand-pumped version.
